The Anacostia Watershed Society protects and restores the Anacostia River and its watershed communities by cleaning the water, recovering the shores, and honoring the heritage.

The Anacostia River is cleaner now than it has been in generations. We have come a long way, but there is still more to do. Our 25th Anniversary Campaign will focus on the next big push forward for the Anacostia Watershed Society – And we need your support!

Your contribution enables AWS to create a watershed where people can both live and respect the environment for the safe use of all.

students planting Expand environmental education.
Through our Watershed Stewards Academy, River Smart Schools, Watershed Explorers and Teacher Training, we engage thousands of students, K-12, in environmental science programs both in classrooms and field activities.  Our partnerships with schools, other environmental organizations and state and local agencies enable us to reach a wide audience of stakeholders.
Commit to stewardship.
Our incredible core of volunteers are best known for their river and community cleanups, but they also work on a wide array of activities.  Programs range from Invasive Plant Management, helping local plant and wildlife populations, to Native Plant Restoration, reintroducing native plants, to Water and Pollution Monitoring, measuring for the presence of pollutants and attempting to locate and cleanup the source.

From kayak and canoe paddles to biking, jogging and walking to catch and release fishing to native plant walks and bird watching and photography, we invite everyone to join us for fun, enjoyment and exercise.  We provide equipment, maps, organized excursions and expert guides to enhance the experience.
Advance public policy and advocacy.
Confronting the main impediments to a healthy river means addressing the challenges of from stormwater runoff, bacteria, toxic chemicals and trash.  Through the River Report Card, we analyze data and assess public policy choices being made to restore the river.  Noticeable progress has been achieved with limiting usage of disposable plastic bags, reducing impervious surfaces, and creating green roofs.
