Vision: To make the Anacostia and its tributaries swimmable and fishable, to restore and protect our local environment for the health and enjoyment of everyone in our community, and to bring together people across all walks of life to achieve this vision. Effectiveness: This no-frills, stay-focused organization mobilizes volunteers for tree plantings and cleanups, persuades local governments to change their priorities to save the environment, and pressures polluters to clean up their acts.
Territory: Montgomery County, Prince George's County, Washington, DC; Our priority is the health of the local environment. (See Map) Award-Winning: The Society's work in restoration, preservation and pollution prevention won it the prestigious United Nations Achievement Award, Sierra Club Outstanding Achievement Award, and the President's Volunteer Action Award.
