The Anacostia Watershed Society is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) environmental organization. The mission of the Anacostia Watershed Society (AWS) is to restore and protect the Anacostia River and its watershed by cleaning the water, recovering the shores, and honoring the heritage. The watershed encompasses 176 square miles throughout eastern Montgomery County and northern Prince George’s County in Maryland, and the eastern half of Washington, DC. Our ultimate goal is to make the Anacostia River swimmable and fishable in keeping with the Clean Water Act of 1972. Our work is conducted through a four-part program that involves environmental education, restoration, advocacy, and recreation.

INTERNSHIPS

Please call AWS for more information at 301-699-6204 or email us.

VOLUNTEERING

AWS is always in need of volunteers. Volunteer opportunities are very diverse and offer various invaluable ways that individuals can get involved in watershed restoration efforts. We welcome the help of professionals for legal advising, grant writing, fundraising, marketing and data entry, in addition to our group work on the river and around the watershed. AWS volunteers help with many of our field events including trash cleanups, non-native plant removals, tree plantings, and canoe tours. If you are interested in joining us, please call or email. Or see our calendar about volunteering at an upcoming event. We look forward to working with you!

For more information or to volunteer for an event, email us or call 301-699-6204
