About the AWS Teacher Training Institute

Anacostia Watershed Society is proud to offer training based on our popular Watershed Explorers (WE) and River Habitat (RH) education programs to teachers in Prince Georges and Montgomery Counties in Maryland and the District of Columbia.

The teacher training institute will give participants a chance to conduct all of the “in class” demonstrations and experiments from the WE and RH programs. Activities also include a wetland planting and canoe-based field experience on the Anacostia River. AWS's goal is to help teachers effectively enhance their classroom science curricula and to help students have a “meaningful watershed education experience” as mandated by the Maryland and D.C. governments.

Teacher trainings are conducted during the school year and over the summer months. More information is provided below.

All teacher training sessions are FREE*. Participants will receive a Teacher’s Manual for AWS education programs and certification and curriculum for Project WET. Through generous grants from Fannie Mae and NOAA, teachers will also receive all of the teaching materials and maps necessary to teach AWS programs in their classroom. Trained teachers also get priority in scheduling river trips and restoration events during the school year.

School-year Teacher Training

There are two teacher trainings during the school year. Material covered includes both the AWS Watershed Explorers program and the AWS River Habitat program. The program also includes Project WET curriculum and certification, as well as canoe-based field study and wetland restoration components both of which take place on the Anacostia River. Participating students are asked to commit to 5 evening sessions and 1 Saturday session.

Teachers will receive 15 DC Professional Learning Units (Seat Hours)/1 Maryland CPD credit after completing the course.
