Join the Anacostia Watershed Society on Saturday, July 19, 2008 for the 14th Annual Anacostia Port Towns Paddlesport Regatta at Bladensburg Waterfront Park in Bladensburg, Maryland. Since 1995 the Regatta has brought Washington, D.C. Metro Area residents together to discover world-class recreational opportunities on the Anacostia River. Participants compete in a series of friendly canoe, kayak and Chinese dragon boat races suitable for all ages and skill levels. Boats and safety equipment are provided free of charge, and racers receive trophies or medal for finishing in the top three!

Gas and air fare too expensive? Plan your staycation here in the D.C. Metropolitan Area! Register to race in the 14th Annual Anacostia Port Towns Paddlesport Regatta today! Click here to download the entry form or call 301-699-6204.

For the landlubbers and those waiting for the award ceremony, AWS offers a series of onshore entertainment options throughout the day at Bladensburg Waterfront Park. Join us for our AWS Eco-fair under the Rope Walk Pavillion and peruse exhibit tables from eco-friendly businesses and organizations operating in our area. Stop by the AWS Dunk Tank featuring appearances from some well-known faces from our local political scene. (That's right, Mayor Walter James of Bladenburg is coming back and his challenging some of his colleagues to take the plunge this time!) Don't forget our annual Regatta Raffle featuring fabulous prizes donated by some of our local businesses. And, for kids and adults alike, we'll have a live birds of prey exhibit onsite featuring Clearwater Nature Center's famous Bald Eagle. You don't want to miss this event!

Help us spread the word far and wide! The 2008 Regatta is right around the corner. We need racers! Click here to download the flyer for the 2008 Anacostia Port Towns Paddlesport Regatta.

Invitational Challenge Races

Our races for local elected official are back this year! You can expect to see your favorite mayor, councilperson, or senator don a bathing suit, pick up a paddle, and sprint for the finish line during one of our four special challenge races.

  • The Mayors' Cup features town exectuives and and their staff members from municipalities around the watershed (with emphaisis on Port Towns communities).

  • The Council Cup is open to county councilmembers and executives from Montgomery and Prince George's Counties; as well as, D.C.'s mayor and city council representatives.

  • The Anacostia Cup challenges members of Maryland's General Assembly to race one another for the glory of the watershed constituencies they represent.

  • The Congressional Cup, now in its second year, is for our rough-and-tumble federal representatives from D.C. and the State of Maryland. Senator Ben Cardin's (D-MD) team is already onboard for 2008 and they've challenged Representative Chris Van Hollen's (D-MD) team to a rematch. It's going to be an epic race!
