The primary goal of Storm Drain Stenciling is to educate the public regarding the destination of the storm drains so the dumping of trash and toxics into the storm drain system is minimized. Much of the pollution that is found on the Anacostia River is coming from the roads. Runoff from parking lots and roads carries with it pollution from our cars and liter from the streets.
By painting the slogan "Don't Dump, Anacostia River Drainage," on the strorm drains, we are showing people in their community that what goes into the drain flows into the river. This is a preventative measure that has had much success in many urban cities around the country.
