Date: Saturday March 12th, 2016

Time: 10 am - 12:00 pm

Meeting Location: First United Methodist Church of Hyattsville, 6201 Belcrest Rd Hyattsville, MD 20782.  There is parking on site.  The site is also metro accessible via the Prince George's Plaza metro station (green/yellow lines) and several metrobus lines.  Please consider taking public transit to this event!

Description: The First United Methodist Church is working with the Anacostia Watershed Society to improve the stormwater management at their site through stormwater retrofits. This large project includes removing impervious surfaces, such as parts of the parking lot, to make room for tree boxes as well as creating/planting several Bayscapes. A Bayscape is a garden that uses native plants that help prevent erosion and absorb and treat stormwater better than traditional gardens.  This event will focus on performing maintenance of the site, including removing invasive plants and collecting fallen leaves.

Physical Requirements: This event will involve repetitive bending, digging, lifting, use of hands tools, and walking. Participants will be expected to wear boots or closed toed shoes for the duration of the event.  Long pants are encouraged for protection.  AWS will provide water but please bring a re-usable water bottle and a small snack if you think you'll need it. If you think any of the physical requirements will be problematic, please let us know.

What to Expect:

·         Please be prepared to work hard and, possibly, get muddy!

·         All of our volunteer events have an educative approach; AWS staff will talk about our watershed and the history and ecology of the area, and will be   sure to point out interesting native plants and animals.

·         AWS staff will brief everyone about basic safety measures and proper tool use to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience!

What to Bring:

·         Closed-toe shoes are required and long pants are recommended for all events.

·         Please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty and remember to dress in layers as the weather can change!

·         All tools, training, and other supplies necessary will be provided!

Maximum number of volunteers: 25
