ACTION ALERT: Call and write NOW to support the bag bill

It was only a matter of time before industry flexed its financial muscle to defend their polluting plastic bags.  Yesterday bag bill opponents swamped the Maryland House of Delegates with computerized "patch through" calls that connect constituents directly to their legislators. This is likely funded by industry so who knows what they are telling constituents before they connect them with legislators.  Last year the American Chemistry Council (plastics lobbying group) and manufacturer Hilex spent an estimated $2 Million to defeat the California bag bill.  Now someone is waving money around Maryland to defeat a public policy that we have seen work well in DC.

They should be catching fish, not plastic bags!

In DC plastic bag distribution declined about 80%, leading to a 66% decrease in bags found at river cleanups, with 78% of businesses surveyed reporting positive or no effects from the bill, and 75% of residents surveyed reporting a decrease in their personal plastic bag use.  No wonder the plastics industry opposes this legislation - it is public policy that works!

Industry action alerts often state that large numbers of jobs will be lost at bag manufacturers if a bag bill is passed.  But what about the watermen that have lost their jobs as the health of the Bay has declined?  We need to think about the bigger picture, about the true cost of plastic bags in oil, pollution, and trash.

We have to counteract any disinformation and also show that there is widespread support for this bill, so please call or email your legislators! AWS doesn't have an expensive patch through system so you'll have to look up your Delegate's phone numbers on the web.
