Draft Anacostia Park Management Plan Available

If there was a juncture where you could do something to restore and protect the tidal wetlands of the Anacostia River it is NOW!!  The National Park Service (NPS) just announced the availability of the Draft Anacostia Park Wetland and Resident Goose Management Plan and Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for public review and comment.

Geese eggs in the tidal Anacostia River.

The purpose of this Draft Plan/EIS is to direct NPS on the managament of wetlands and Resident Canada Geese (Branta canadensis) at Anacostia Park for a period of 15 years.  This is not only about the much needed goose population management but also about wetland restoration, invasive plant control, restoration of fish and wildlife habitat, enhancement of nature interpretive infraestructure and the experience of the park visitor; and more.  In the Draft Plan/EIS NPS formulates five alternatives from a no action -- more of the same -- alternative to four action alternatives that vary in type and level of management intensity.

AWS concurs with NPS' choice of alternative B (see Chapter 2, part 4 of the document) since it is the one that best meets the objectives of the plan and is the most suitable at tackling the pressing problems faced by the tidal River and its biodiversity.  Alternative B employs a wide variety of goose management techniques as well as many proposed (and highly needed) restoration measures.

One of the outcomes of a high level of goose population management would be the (needed) recovery of tidal emergent wetlands.  We currently have to invest in fencing installation and maintenance to avoid goose grazing in every wetland planting we do!  Outside of the fences all that grows is the unpalatable vegetation like spatterdock and other plant species.  This needs to stop!

Our unhealthy river badly needs more areas of healthy wetlands that can do their 'kidney job' of filtering, and removing pollutants and sediment that come from the rest of the watershed.  Restoring wetlands and ensuring their long-term conservation is one of the best things we could to for this river.  Resident Canada geese might be native to this country but that doesn't mean they are native to this ecoregion of the country.  They were introduced by people and they have become invasive causing significant environmental impacts just like the other invasive species from other continents and they need to be controled likewise.  Would you prefer keeping one invasive species or a whole ecosystem with hundreds of important native species that are cleaning the river and providing us with many other ecosystem services?

Take your time to read and analyze the document available electronically at, or make sure you make your voice is heard at the scheduled public meeting at the United States Park Police Anacostia Operations Facility on September 7th, 2011, from 6:30 - 8:30pm, and a hearing to take public comments at 7:15pm.  For questions call Anacostia Park headquarters at (202)690-5185.
