Funding Available For DC Green Roofs

Rebate helped fund this green roof atop the Mary Graydon Center at American University.

If you haven’t already heard, the District Department of the Environment (DDOE) is once again providing rebates, at $5 per square foot, for green roofs to qualified applicants for the third consecutive year! The Anacostia Watershed Society (AWS) is administering the program for DDOE and believes this is a great opportunity to help people cover some costs of their proposed green roofs as well as an opportunity to reach out to those unfamiliar with this technology all in an effort to help restore the watershed.

What is a green roof? Simply put, it is a system installed as an addition to a traditional roof and is made up of plants, growing medium, drainage layer, root barrier, and water proof membrane. Green roof systems help mitigate impacts of development by offering many benefits, such as filtering stormwater, providing wildlife habitat, decreasing cooling costs, and increasing property values.

More information about green roofs and the Rebate Program can be found on our webpage as well as DDOE’s website. Interested building owners and developers seeking to install a green roof on their building located in DC can get the process started by filling out a registration form, found on our webpage.
