Green Power Night at Joe's Movement Emporium

Last Thursday AWS participated in a community forum in Mt. Rainier, MD, centered around ways people can go greener at home.  We were proud to join Clean Currents, the Protect Our Planet Corn Heating Cooperative, and the Anacostia's Mayor, the Honorable Adam Ortiz of Edmonston, MD.

AWS spoke first on the challenges facing the Anacostia, including our central problem of uncontrolled stormwater runoff from roads, parking lots, and roofs throughout the watershed.  Homeowners can help cut down stormwater flows by keeping their rain on their property - disconnecting downspouts, installing rain barrels, and using pervious pavement for driveways all help restore normal hydrology.

Permeable pavers recently installed in the Bladensburg Town Hall parking lot.

Next up was AWS board member Adam Ortiz, who we like to call "The Anacostia's Mayor" because of his hard work locally and nationally to promote green infrastructure that protects waterways.  The Anacostia River splits Edmonston in two, with the town's main street Decatur Street having a bridge over the river.  After experiencing flooding several years in a row due to stormwater flows from other communities, and never once flooding from the Anacostia River itself, the town decided to try and be part of the solution to its flooding problems.  The town remade Decatur as a model green street by installing pedestrian and bike-friendly features, using LED lighting, and including extensive stormwater management features that treat 90% of all runoff generated by Decatur's paved surfaces.  If a small, working-class town like Edmonston can go green, anyone can!

New curbs along Edmonston's Green Street.

The night ended with presentations from Clean Currents about purchasing residential wind power, and from the POP Corn co-op about home heating through burning corn biomass - a carbon neutral heating option.  It was wonderful to see the cross pollination among these green champions - Edmonston buys Clean Currents wind power for its Decatur Street lighting, AWS works closely with Edmonston and Mayor Ortiz, etc.
