This Week at AWS

This week is a busy one in the stewardship office. Actually, all of April is pretty action-packed for us, but this week, we have been working on a smorgasbord of different projects. So, let's review...

On Monday, Jorge and I took our DNR StreamWaders gear and headed to a channelized stream in Colmar Manor to do some macroinvertebrate sampling. We were surprised that in this concrete waterway, with almost no natural habitat, we found a big crayfish in our bucket! That's interesting news for the folks over at DNR, no doubt.

A big crayfish (cambarus acuminatus) found in our sample

Yesterday, Jorge, our intern Tyler, and I were at ARMR, preparing a section of the project area with landscaping fabric and planting some great wild rye grasses that we picked up from the National Plant Materials Center (thanks again!). These rye plants will provide great food and habitat in the way of cover for native insects and other small animals.

Our truck bed was full of rye plants; Tyler and Jamie looking at a job well done.

Today, we're taking some volunteers (including my CCC colleague Stephanie! holler!) out to work on our phragmites project, putting up goose fencing to protect the native cattails and other plants from geese and the ever-fearsome invasive phragmites. Tomorrow, we're going to do some more DNR Stream Wading, and Saturday, we've got a big tree planting at the Bladensburg Wetlands!

That's it for now; I've got to go run and fence off a bunch of phragmites!
