Wildlife in the Urban Jungle, the Resilient Red Fox

By: Maryn Foreman, Spring Stewardship Intern

Red foxes are everywhere, maybe even in your backyard! The red fox has become accustomed to an urban habitat by using sheds for nests, eating exposed garbage and mice. Since mice are abundant in cities, the fox offers great rodent control. It has been documented that fox even live longer in urban environments. The coyote and bald eagle are some other natural predators native to this area, but they do not adapt as well to the urban environment, giving the fox a competitive advantage.

The best time to see a fox is during dusk or dawn, but do not be alarmed if you see them out in the daytime either. The other day during a volunteer event at Kingman Island to create goose fencing around aquatic vegetation, we happened to see a mother fox roaming around with her two kits. The kits were still very young and looked like two fluff balls prancing around. Once the mother saw us, she picked them up and ran away-- what a great sight to see!  After some research, I found that foxes are fast learners and usually mate for life.  Foxes are timid creatures and tend to flee from humans. The red fox is still a wild animal and should not be intentionally fed or touched. If you should see one in your neighborhood that is causing a nuisance, call the humane society.

Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell someone!
