AWS works to fulfill its goal of returning the Anacostia to a swimmable and fishable condition by fostering partnerships with residents and leaders of local watershed communities. Part of this work includes finding new ways for the people to enjoy the river and nearby natural areas on a regular basis.
Whether educating the public, researching new conservation techniques and technologies, or recommending changes in policy and legislation, AWS’s advocacy team works hard to support the organization’s hands-on environmental protection and restoration activities.
When environmental accidents or injustices occur along the Anacostia or its tributaries, AWS advocates work to protect local communities and natural areas by compelling polluters to take responsibility for their actions.
Real environmental change cannot take place without the support of the elected officials and agency representatives who write and implement our laws. AWS’s advocacy team work to create relationships across all levels of government capable of generating policies and programs that serve the best interests of the Anacostia River and all our watershed communities.
AWS wants everyone to stay up-to-date on the latest issues affecting the health of the Anacostia River, its tributaries, and all our watershed communities. That is why we conduct and participate in a number of environmental information campaigns each year. Campaigns range from screenings of our documentary film Restoring The Peoples’ River to issue-based letter writing.
Overdevelopment is one of the most critical issues affecting the health of the Anacostia River, our communities, and local natural areas. AWS seeks to work with developers, government officials, and the public at large to prevent runaway development, ensure adherence to pollution control policy, maximize the use of environmentally-sensitive technologies and techniques during construction.
