The Anacostia River’s recovery wouldn’t be possible without volunteers. Over the years, hundreds of thousands of dedicated individuals have given their time to the Anacostia Watershed Society; and because of them, the river continues to heal.
Interesting & Inspiring Volunteer Work
Our volunteers restore wetlands, plant native plants, collect seeds, and help with many other projects – oftentimes pieces of larger plans that make a big impact on the river. All of our volunteer activities have an educational component and are an opportunity to learn about the watershed.

Volunteer in Our Community – Anacostia River Outdoor Volunteer Trail
In a collaboration with eleven local environmental organizations, the Anacostia Watershed Society supported the launch of the Anacostia River Outdoor Volunteer Adventure Trail in Fall 2025. This powerful new collaboration is designed to strengthen and diversify outdoor volunteerism in the Anacostia River Watershed. For more information about the project, visit the landing page here.
Our shared goal is to break down barriers and create new pathways for everyone to discover the joy and benefits of volunteering – whether planting gardens, cleaning up waterways or sharing fresh produce with neighbors.
