AWS-FOKHI Mussel Release Day at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens
Note: This event is weather dependent!
Date: Sunday, October 27, 2019
Time: 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Meeting Location: Volunteers will meet us at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens (KAG), located at 1550 Anacostia Ave NE, Washington, DC 20019 (Map). We will meet you in the parking lot and walk you to the project site, which is about a mile away, so please wear shoes you are comfortable walking in!
- Getting there: Parking is available at this location. You can also take the Orange or Silver Metro lines to the Deanwood Metro Station, which is about a 0.7 mile (14 minute) walk to KAG.
Site Location: We will be working at Kingman Lake, which is alongside the Anacostia River Trail by the red Kenilworth Lake inlet bridge. Click here for walking directions. We will walk you over to the project site from the parking lot at KAG.
Project: Volunteers will join AWS and FOKHI (Friends of Kingman and Heritage Islands) to participate in the monitoring (counting, measuring, recording data, and tagging) of mussels that have been living in floating baskets at Heritage Island for a year. These activities are expected to take approximately 2 hours. Participants will then spend the final hour of the workday helping to release the mussels into the Kenilworth Marsh. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Physical Requirements: This event will likely involve lifting, bending, and walking (we will walk 1 mile to get to the site and we will walk 1 mile to get back to the entrance of KAG). Participants will be expected to wear closed-toed shoes for the duration of the event. If you think any of the physical requirements will be problematic, please let us know.
Registration is required: Registration will close on Friday, October 25, 2019, at 4:30 pm. Please register to receive additional information regarding proper clothing, day of contact, etc.
