Description:  Volunteers will join the Anacostia Watershed Society for a Tree Canopy Restoration Workday along the Anacostia River at Colmar Manor Community Park! During this workday we will focus on tree maintenance, which could include repairing tree shelters and fencing, and removing weeds/invasive plant species to allow the native trees to continue to flourish. The tree canopy along this stretch of the Anacostia River has been devastated by the invasive emerald ash borer beetle. Together with Bat Conservation International, we have planted more native and bat-friendly trees that are not affected by the beetle to restore the tree canopy. These trees will also prevent erosion of the riverbank, manage stormwater and filter surface water before it goes into the Anacostia River, and create habitat for wildlife. By participating in this project, you will help us to improve the water quality of the Anacostia River and the habitat for bats and other wildlife.

Physical Level of Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult

  • This event will likely involve lifting, bending, and walking in some steep and muddy areas. To get to the site, volunteers will walk about half a mile to a mile and go down a steep hill. Participants will be expected to wear closed-toed shoes for the duration of the event. If you think any of the physical requirements will be problematic, please let us know.

Registration is required. Please register prior to the event date to receive additional information about the event.
