Project: During this Wetland Restoration Workday, volunteers will help the Anacostia Watershed Society (AWS) to remove the invasive wetland plant Phragmites, also known as common reed, from the wetlands in Kingman Lake by the Langston Golf Course. For more than 15 years AWS has been committed to restoring the watershed wetlands, with most of our restoration efforts focused on the tidal emergent wetlands of the river. We have been working on over 20 acres of wetlands in DC and the Maryland portion of the Anacostia River. Dense areas of Phragmites in the wetlands decrease the biodiversity and quality of wetland habitat, as they often outcompete the native wetland plants. We will mechanically remove the Phragmites by cutting and pulling during this event to prevent expansion. By participating in this event, you will help the native wetland plants continue to flourish, grow, filter, and protect wetland biodiversity and habitat.

This event will require wading in mucky mud/water in warm weather conditions. Sunglasses are a plus to protect your eyes from the plants, as they can be very tall this time of year. Bring plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated.

Physical Level of Difficulty: Difficult - Very muddy!

  • This event requires wading in very mucky mud and water in warm weather conditions, lifting, and bending. If you think any of the physical requirements will be problematic, please let us know.

Registration is required. Please register to receive additional information about the event.
