Meet the Anacostia River's freshwater mussels! We are inviting all residents of the Anacostia Watershed to come on out to the riverside at Buzzard Point to get up close and personal with these filtering marvels! The Anacostia Watershed Society's Mussel Power program has been steadily restoring river's mussels to healthier levels, and this is your chance to come and learn more! You can join volunteers as they scout for mussels on the riverbanks, see a live filtering demonstration, and learn more about these fascinating critters from AWS staff.
We are delighted to be joined by scuba divers from One Ocean Scuba who will be helping us perform an in-depth survey of the thriving mussel population at this part of the Anacostia River.
Getting there: There is very limited parking in this area (plus it's a game day for soccer) so we strongly recommend biking or taking metro to come to Buzzard Point.
